CMC spider chosen for parliament restoration

A CMC S23 Hybrid spider lift has been delivered to the Palace of Westminster, home to the UK’s houses of Parliament.

The unit was delivered in April through the manufacturer’s subsidiary CMC United Kingdom. Its purpose is to support the Houses of Parliament Restoration and Renewal Programme, along with general maintenance at the historic base of British politics.

Built-in AD 1016, the Palace of Westminster is the seat of democracy in the UK and a popular tourist destination. The building covers the same area as 16 football pitches and has four floors arranged on 65 different levels.

At the end of 2021, Brian Fleckney from Uk rental company Star Platforms, working alongside CMC UK, won the tender to supply the prestigious project with the CMC S23 Hybrid version.

Due to the age of the buildings and their cultural significance, expert advice was required to ensure that the correct machine was selected for the delicate restoration work.

Delicate surroundings

The CMC S23 spider lift delivers a working height of 23m, an unrestricted outreach of 12.4m, up and over clearance of 9m, and a low weight. Its versatility allowing it to access hard-to-reach places and to work outside or inside buildings is partly made possible thanks to its adjustable track width to minimum of 85cm. Moreover, the S23 has variable outrigger positioning enabling users to set up correctly and safely without risk of damage to the historic artifacts and architecture.

The restoration and refurbishment work carried out by CMC’s S23 will ensure that the Palace of Westminster, which is a UNESCO world heritage site, will be preserved in all its majesty for future generations.

Alessandro Mastrogiacomo, CMC’s export sales manager said, “The successful outcome at such a prestigious customer as the thousand-year-old British Parliament is further confirmation of the validity of our objective to become the reference brand at a global level in the market for self-propelled tracked platforms.”
