Fatalities in Singapore

01 May 2008

Two separate scaffold collapses claimed the lives of three workers in Singapore in April. In the first accident, which occurred on 19th April, two were killed when a bamboo scaffold on an unfinished, two-storey building in the economic development zone in Qingcun Town suddenly collapsed. Four other workers were injured in the accident.

The second accident occurred on the Stonecutters Bridge construction project. This is a 1.6 km long bridge that once completed in 2008 will be one of the world's longest cable-stayed bridges. Twelve workers were working on a 13 m (43 ft) scaffold structure 5 m (17 ft) long and 2 m (7 ft) wide when it failed. Most of the men managed to escape, but four fell to the ground, one of whom later died from his injuries.
