The annual Access 50 listing of the world's largest access rental fleets indicates that despite growing order books for the manufacturers the rental companies are mostly replacing not growing their fleets.

The top four companies remain the same as last year and are in order United Rentals, Ashtead group, RSC Equipment Rental and Lavendon, this year HERC (Hertz Equipment Rental Co) has swapped its sixth place for fifth with Japanese giant Nikken Corp.

The size of the top five rental fleets have grown just 0.8% from 2010 as have the top 10. The top 50 have just 2% more machines than last year.

Despite this there are some companies which have enjoyed exciting growth US companies Trico Lift and H&E Equipment have grown 49% and 25% respectively but Access International feels obliged to point out that last year's figures were estimates and may have been a little harsh, nevertheless this indicates significant growth. Force Access an Australian company grew its fleet 38% and French company Acces Industrie grew 43%.

Cramo, Gruppa Venpa, Kiloutou, System Lift, Loxam and Boels Verhuur all showed significant fleet growth.

This year the list also includes our first representatives from South America: Brazilian company Mills enters the list at Number 32 and Solaris operating in Brazil and Argentina sneaks in at number 50.
