Four construction workers killed in Germany after scaffolding collapse

Four construction workers have died on a construction site in Germany and another was seriously injured after scaffolding fell down an elevator shaft.

The workers were all reported to be Bulgarian and were working in a building when the scaffolding collapsed from the eighth floor.

The accident happened on a site in the Ueberseequartier in Hamburg’s HafenCity on the Elbe river.

A statement from Hamburg’s fire and rescue services on social media network X (formerly known as Twitter) said: “Scaffolding on a construction site in the HafenCity fell over several floors in an elevator shaft and buried several people.

“One person was rescued with serious injuries, but help came too late for four other people.”

The cause of the scaffolding collapse has not yet been established.

HafenCity is the largest ongoing urban redevelopment project in Europe, with residential buildings, offices, hotels and shops all being constructed in the area.
