Haulotte MEWPS work on space capsule Reaching for the stars: Technicians from the China National Space Administration use MEWPS to assemble and test the Tianhe capusule. In addition to the Tianhe capsule, Haulotte’s articulating boom were also used by the sapce ageny in 2003 on its Shenzhou 5 mission.

A number of Haulotte MEWPs have been used at the Wenchang Space Launch Center in Hainan province, China, to help in the assembly and testing of a space station capsule.

Two Star 10 vertical mast with a 3m jib outreach and a 15m HA15 IP electric articulating boom were used by scientists and technicians to access all areas of the 22.5 tonne Tianhe core capsule.

Comprised of a connecting section, a life-support and control section and a resources section, the Tianhe, which means ‘Harmony of Heavens’, measures 16.6m long and 4.2m in diameter.

Tim Mo, marketing manager at Haulotte China, said, “We are pleased to be part of this historic project, which highlights the performance and reliability of our equipment.”

The Tianhe was successfully launched into orbit, 400km above the Earth surface, on 29 April.

According to the China National Space Administration, the Tianhe is a key component in its new Tiangong (Heavenly Palace) space station.

While the space station is still under construction, upon its completion in 2022 it will become one of the “largest and most sophisticated space-based facilities” in operation.
