Work begins at Layher's new factory for aluminium and wooden scaffolding components.

Scaffolding manufacturer Layher has re-located its Livingston depot in Scotland to a nearby, 12000 m2, company-owned site. The facility includes an administrative and management facility, a storage yard, and demonstration and training areas.

The move follows constuction start of a new manufacturing facility at its base near Eibensbach, Germany (see story, linked right). Layher said the expansions at the two locations signal a "...continuing commitment to development and business growth in 2009".

The new German facility -- comprising four warehouses, three production buildings and offices - will complement a new hot dip galvanising facility to begin operation later this year. Layher UK's managing director, Sean Pike, said that the expansion programme will have created approximately 150 jobs during the period 2007 to 2009.

Layher believes the expansions reflect a commitment to ‘just in time' service. "At a time when much of the construction industry is looking nervously towards 2009, we believe that the steps we are taking in both Germany and Scotland are even more important," said Mr Pike. "These are major developments and both clearly look well beyond business in 2009 towards continuing growth long into the future."
